  • Why do people seek therapy?
Often what leads people to seek therapy is feeling disconnected, stuck, or realizing that our old ways are no longer working or have become a sources of pain. Therapy needs can look very different based on intersectionality, stage of development, life transitions, and exposure to trauma.
  • What is trauma?
To provide you a comprehensive understanding of trauma we pull from the work of leading experts in the field that include, Bessel van der Kolk, Peter Levine, Gabor Mate, Stephen Porges... People often think trauma is what happens to us e.g., parents divorce, a car accident, or sexual abuse. These are traumatic events, whereas trauma is what happens within us and as a result of traumatic events. What happens within us is we disconnect from our emotions, disconnect from our body, have difficulty being in the present moment, develop a negative view of our world, a negative view of ourself and the defensive you of other people and these perspectives keep showing up in your life in the present. The notion that only vulnerable people experience trauma quite naïve, what may be traumatic for one person may not be traumatic another person. Trauma lives in the body and until we address our trauma we pass it on to our children.
  • Is trauma therapy helpful?
Like many things in life the more time, energy, and resources we commit to something the more likely we are to achieve desired outcomes. Trauma therapy is similar to joining the gym with an intention. With the guidance of a personal trainer you limit risk of injury, understand your limitations, focus on different parts of self, reach goals, and move through the process more effectively. With that concept in mind, trauma therapy is most effective with a trained therapist who has done their own healing. Healing trauma can elicit discomfort. But if we maintain consistency, set intentions, and find a comfortable pace to move through the process; you can expand your sense of self and capacity to manage the pain. Of the many forms trauma therapy, we emphasis mind-body connection, though often most neglect in therapy, research shows it produces best outcomes.
  • What type of time commitment and frequency can clients expect?
The length of time in therapy and frequency of sessions varies significantly from one individual to another. This is determined in collaboration between client and therapist. As a starting point we often recommend weekly sessions so that clients can establish a secure base and develop a felt sense of trust, safety, and comfort, which are known to produce better treatment outcomes. The nature of your concern, type of therapy approach being used, and what you hope to gain from therapy can typically provide a general sense of commitment. For clients looking to take part in a deeper level of work or wish to address complex concerns, a comprehensive assessment that looks at the whole person and various aspects of intersectionality that clients would like to incorporate into session. Clients are always informed of assessment results in advance and decisions are made based on your feedback.
  • Benefits of working with a Student Intern?
We have developed as a Student Intern Program with you in mind. We understand that therapy can be costly for many people. Our goal is to limit barriers in accessing much needed services, by offering sessions at a reduced cost. All Student Interns are members of a Regulatory College, and in the final stage of completing their Maters. Our Student Interns have a prior experience in the field and are expected to take part in rigorous ongoing training prior to and through the duration of their internship along with ongoing supervision to ensure you are receiving quality care.
