When working with couples we conflict or disagreement, are are unavoidable and to be expected. What we're really dealing with is emotional disconnection. Feeling alone can be painful, but when we feel alone in our relationship it can cause excruciating pain. We are wired for connect from birth and a desire to love and be loved. The less secure we feel in our relationships, the less functional we become, leaving use emotionally unbalanced. It's when we have no one to turn to, that our body automatically goes into fight or flight mode, where we either avoid or fight back. Unless we are able to make meaning of what's happening couples fall deeper into their negative cycle, where they feel stuck. Using a variety of therapy models, such as emotionally focused therapy, compassionate inquiry, and mindfulness, couples are able to identify their patterns and develop a deeper understanding of what’s keeping them caught in their cycle. By slowing things down, we find what we’re actually dealing with is vulnerability and love. Through insight and compassion couples become less blaming and see greater opportunities for repair.
